The Adventures of
Randall
Randall
From the humble beginnings of a "one-trick puppy" to the heights of international romance, The Adventures of Randall is a charming "four-legged love story" told from the perspective of its canine hero. Randall's journey begins on a cold winter day when he is adopted by a "New Momma" and a "Food Guy," settling into a suburban life filled with neighborhood friends like Thor and Tallahassee. However, Randall’s life is anything but ordinary; his thirst for adventure leads him into extraordinary situations, from deep-sea scuba diving at Rabbit Hole Reef to a daring, high-stakes bungee jump off the Golden Gate Bridge to fund his dreams.
The heart of the tale beats in Buenos Aires, where Randall falls head-over-paws for Angelita Rosario Morena, a glamorous Argentine cabaret singer with a voice that captures his soul. What follows is a whirlwind quest to bridge the distance between their two worlds, involving a career-ending "enthusiastic surrender" from Angelita and a grand wedding at a beautiful Argentine estancia. Combining humor, danger, and a touching look at the bond between humans and their best friends, this memoir celebrates a life well-lived—one filled with "love dust," daring leaps, and the ultimate reward of living happily ever after.
Dogs truly are our best friends.
My first dog was named Sandy. He came to live
with us on a snowy Christmas morning when I was a
wide-eyed four year old. Mom said: “Look under the
chair.” I did, and there, waiting to be discovered, was
my new best friend.
When I was ten we moved out onto State Road 67 into a house next to a giant cornfield. During that year we acquired three dogs. Tootsie was the first. She was a sweet, black and white collie mix. Later on, Whitey and
Stinky showed up. Whitey had been in a terrible fight and had a gaping hole in his neck. We bandaged him up and with love and care he recuperated on his own. When we moved to California, I had to give up my dog family. I wrote the following tearful, farewell poem to Tootsie. I never forgot the first lines:
Farewell Tootsie, old pal; You are a sweet old gal.
Remember how we used to play,
And romp and bark every day?
And how I taught you tricks of all I knew,
You learn very easy, you really do.
A lifetime followed that farewell and during those years more than a dozen dogs came into our family.
Randall is all of those dogs who we came
to dearly love. I hope you will love Randall too.
